Sweet Success for Wake Tech Baking Students - Team Wins the Gold at Triad Pastry Competition
A team of three students in Wake Tech’s Baking and Pastry Arts program has been awarded a gold medal in the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Culinary Salon and Hot Food Competition. The event took place September 14 and 15,2009, at the High Point Showplace in High Point.
Aspiring pastry chefs Sheilla Arcangel, Meredith Brookover and Mo Kurtz competed as a team in the Student Team Pastry Challenge. The gold medal was based on the overall point score for their entry, which included a chocolate showpiece, a decorated cake and an amenities platter. This was the first time a Student Team Pastry Challenge has been included at an ACF competition.
The Wake Tech team competed under the direction of Baking Instructor Caralyn House. "The students did an amazing job of pulling it all together," says Chef House. "The work was entirely theirs, including setting everything up during the two-hour window when I was not allowed on the floor. They made me quite proud!"
Twenty-five students are currently enrolled in Wake Tech’s Baking and Pastry Arts program, which started in the fall of 2008. Wake Tech also offers Wake County’s only full Culinary Arts program, as well as a Hospitality & Restaurant Management degree. Wake Tech sponsors its annual Pastry Show and Competition each spring.
