Q. What are the prerequisites for the Culinary, Baking and HRM classes?
A: The prerequisites for culinary classes are as follows:

SAT Scores of 520 or higher in both critical reading (or verbal) and math section of the SAT Test (taken within 5 years) or ACT Scores of 21 or higher in the reading, writing, and math sections of the ACT Test (taken within 5 years) or a grade of “C” or better in a college-level English and math courses or a placement score that is high enough to take MAT 060, RED 090.

Culinary classes have to be taken in a specific sequence.  CUL 110 (Safety and Sanitation) and CUL 140 (Basic Culinary Skills) are prerequisites for all culinary classes

Q: How much will it cost me to get my two-year degree?
A: We anticipate the total cost for tuition, books, uniforms, and knives to be under $5,000 for the CUL and BPA programs and under $4,000 for the HRM program. Financial aid is available to help defray those costs.

Q: Are classes offered just once a year?
A: Most classes are offered more than once a year, but several classes are only offered once a year, such as the new baking degree classes. Many of the HRM classes are only offered one semester per year. Please check with an instructor or your advisor for more information.

Q. Can I specialize in baking?
A. Yes. Our baking and pastry degree began  fall 2008.  Students will take classes primarily from the baking curriculum, noted with a BPA prefix, as well as some culinary classes.  CUL 110-Sanitation and Safety, CUL 140-Basic Culinary Skills, and CUL 160-Baking I should be taken as a student’s first classes in the fall.  Please contact Chef House at 866-5991 or cmhouse@waketech.edu for advising and a course outline.

Q. Can I take any CUL/HRM classes online?
A. Yes, there are quite a few classes offered online, with that number growing each semester. Some of the classes now offered online are Purchasing, Hospitality Supervision, Sanitation and Safety, Menu Design, and Introduction to Hospitality, just to mention a few.

Q. How can I double major in HRM and CUL? (and Baking?)
A. Yes, it is possible to double major in HRM, BPA and/or CUL.  Declare CUL as your first major, and HRM as your second.  Please meet with Department Head Chef Hadley or Baking Instructor Chef House to work out the best plan of action for you.

Q. How can I get a reservation in Flavors, the student-run restaurant?
A. The reservations are handled by a lottery system.  Go to our website: http://flavors.waketech.edu and log in. There you can preview the menus and find out what dates we are open. Each lottery will open two weeks prior to the date of service. Select the date you wish to dine with us and enter the number in your party.  Then, the week before that date, we will run the computer-generated lottery. You will be notified by e-mail if you have been selected, and an RSVP email will confirm your seat in Flavors.

Q. What are some job opportunities and career options for me?
A. Our departments enjoy a very high placement rate. We currently have graduates who manage or work at Poppyseed Market, Humble Pie, the Angus Barn, many area country clubs, caterers and bakeries, not to mention several personal chefs in the area. We also have current students placed at The Umstead Hotel, An Restaurant, Bistro 64, and Sheraton Imperial Hotel, just to name a few. As Raleigh continues to grow, the opportunities will only increase. As you progress through the program, your advisors can help direct you into the segment in which you are most interested.

Q. What are some job opportunities for HRM?
A. There are endless career possibilities with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. The Triangle Area is bursting with growth. The new Raleigh Convention Center and the four -star hotels coming to the area are in need of educated, qualified managers. If a student is interested in travel, the hospitality field is a global market. It is very important to find a career and company that fit your style so that you and the company will be successful. We try to help students with that fit. They learn about the wide variety of opportunities in HRM110 (Introduction to Hospitality).

Upon graduation our Restaurant Management students are typically assistant managers of chain restaurants if they have worked as hourly associates. They move up quickly and typically.  District manager positions are limited to those with a college degree from Wake Tech or another school.

Our Hotel Management students are typically assistant general managers of limited service properties of 150 rooms or less if they have worked as hourly associates. If the hotel is a full service hotel of 300 rooms or more, they are typically assistant managers of different departments such as front desk, sales, or food and beverage provided that they have had some hourly work experience.

Q. What do I need for the first day of class?
A. This depends on the class. At the least, students should try to have the required textbook, a notebook and a pen or pencil. The Basic Culinary Skills class (CUL 140) will not require a uniform or knives until the third week of classes. After this class is completed, all culinary students are required to be in uniform on the first day of class.

Q. What if I can only attend school part-time?
A. That is fine. We offer classes online and at night also. Classes may be taken one at a time. You can receive a certificate in HRM, Culinary and Baking. You can also receive an Associates Degree in HRM, Culinary and Baking.

Q. What is required for Co-Op?
A. To be eligible to participate in the Culinary Co-Op Program, a student must meet the following requirements:
  • Complete at least 14 credit hours of curriculum-related course work at Wake Tech.
  • Must have a 2.0 or better Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Obtain the Faculty Advisor Recommendation in writing (signature on the Co-Op Application).
  • Demonstrate satisfactory personal appearance, attitude, and ability to work.
  • Meet health requirements.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States.  A student should be prepared to produce a social security card, birth certificate and/or driver’s license

Q. What is the difference between a Certificate and a Degree?
A. The difference between a Culinary Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree and a Culinary Technology Certificate is the required number of credit hours. The two-year Culinary Technology Associate in Applied Science degree requires 74 semester credit hours and takes two years to complete. The Culinary Technology Certificate requires 18 semester credit hours. The certificate classes can be taken during the day or in the evening and can be completed within a year. The Culinary Technology Certificate does not require any general education (English, math) classes.

Q. Where can I buy tools, knives, and uniforms?
A. Please see enclosed flyers. These items can be purchased at the Wake Tech Bookstore and a variety of area stores.

Q. Where can I find a description of each class I will need to take?
A. Please see the Course Description documents.

Q. Who is my Advisor?
A.

Students enrolled in the Culinary, Baking, or  Hotel and Restaurant Management Programs will work with a Student Services Advisor during their first semester at Wake Tech.  Students will then be assigned to a faculty advisor (an instructor who works in the Culinary or HRM Program) who will advise the students for the duration of their program at Wake Tech.  Please feel free to contact any of us for advising at any time.

You can find out who your advisor is by going to “My Profile” in Web Advisor on the Wake Tech Web Page.
